Composite family – asteraceae (compositae)
It is a perennial herbaceous plant up to 1.5 m tall.
The stems are erect, branched at the top, densely leafy along the entire length, woody at the base. The colour of the stems varies from dark green to light green.
The leaves are alternate, linear-lanceolate, at the apex long, acuminate, with three longitudinal veins. The lower leaves on the edge of ostropilobate-toothed, short branch, 5-12 cm long. The upper - entire, sessile, in length reach 2-8 cm.
The flower baskets are small, with a diameter of 3-5 mm, consist of 4-6 marginal false-lingual and 5-8 median tubular flowers. All flowers are golden-yellow, the pseudopodia flowers are arranged in one row. The baskets are assembled in one-sided arcuate curved brushes, brushes - in sprawling pyramidal panicles. The fruit is a narrow cylindrical achene 1-1.5 mm long with a tuft of white hairs.
In the first year, Canadian goldenrod forms a branched rhizome with fibrous lateral roots. On the basal part of the rhizomes are laid bud renewal, giving root shoots.
It blooms in late July - August, bears fruit in August - September.
The origin of Canadian goldenrod is North America. It is widely spread in the USA, it is found in the mountains up to the subalpine belt. In Russia, it is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant and is found in wild form. For medical purposes, grown in the Poltava region (Ukraine).
The chemical composition of goldenrod
In the aerial part of Canadian goldenrod contained:
- flavonoid aglycones (quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin) and its glycosides,
- coumarins (skopoletin, umbelliferon),
- hydroxycitric acid (coffee),
- a large number of triterpenic saponins.
Harvesting and storage of raw materials
Harvesting. Cleaning the aboveground mass is carried out at the beginning of flowering with the help of a forage harvester (with a cutting height of 36 cm). This method allows to obtain raw materials in the form of a chop with a cutting length of 10-15 cm, which is very convenient for subsequent transportation, drying and finishing of the raw materials.
Drying. It is dried on air in the shade and well-ventilated areas or in dryers at a temperature of 50-60 °C.
Storage. It is stored in a dry and well-ventilated area.
External signs of raw materials
The raw material is the aerial part of Canadian goldenrod, which is dried and freed from coarse stems.
The stems are cylindrical and pubescent. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex, sharply serrated along the edge, or entire, with three longitudinal veins, pubescent along the entire lamina or along the veins.
The calathidium is small, 3-4 mm long, in one-sided brushes, gathered in panicles; 2-3-row cover, pale green; all flowers are fertile, marginal - motile-lingual, median - tubular, golden-yellow. The fruit is a narrow cylindrical seed with a tuft of fine white hair.
The smell is absent, the taste is bitterer and slightly astringent.
