Laminaria is a valuable food product, it is used both independently and as a component of many original dishes.
As a medicinal plant, laminaria was known in ancient China. Laminaria has long been used also by residents of Japan and Korea as a medicinal culture. Laminaria is famous for its high iodine content and important healing properties.
In thallus of laminaria contain:
- polysaccharides (alginic acid, laminarin, mannitol, fucoidin);
- iodides (2.7-3%);
- vitamins (B1, B2, B12, A, C, D, E, carotenoids);
- salts of potassium, sodium, magnesium, bromine, cobalt, iron, manganese, compounds of sulfur and phosphorus;
- nitrogen-containing substances;
- proteins (5-10%);
- carbohydrates (13-21%);
- fats (1-3%).
Laminaria has a laxative effect, which is due to the ability of the drug to swell and, increasing in volume, cause irritation of the receptors of the intestinal mucosa. In connection with the content of iodine salts, it has a thyroid and hypolipidemic effect. Effective in case of thyroid dysfunction caused by iodine deficiency, and also temporarily suppresses metabolism in case of hyperthyroidism.
Laminaria polysaccharides have pronounced antitumor, radioprotective properties, protect the body from radionuclides, which can be used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. The ability of kelp to remove radionuclides and heavy metals from the body is due to alginates. The laminarin polysaccharide has a hypoglycemic effect.
Laminaria is used against atherosclerosis, in the treatment and prevention of endemic goiter. The products are prepared with the addition of seaweed, in doses corresponding to the daily need for iodine, are recommended for use in goiter-endemic areas.
Laminaria is recommended as a mild laxative for chronic atonic constipation. Its effect is similar to the physiological laxative effect of fruits and vegetables.
Contraindications to the use of laminaria are:
- hemorrhagic diathesis;
- furunculosis and other diseases for which iodine preparations are not indicated.
With the prolonged application of laminaria and increased sensitivity to iodine, the phenomena of iodism are possible.
