Beggar-ticks herb — herba bidentis
Bur beggar-ticks — bidens tripartita l.
Composite family – asteraceae (compositae)
Other names: bur marigold, stick-tights, Spanish needles, tickseed.
It is an annual herbaceous plant with from 15 to 100 cm tall. The root is strongly branched. The stem is rounded, oppositely-branched.
The leaves are with short winged petioles, deeply divided into three, with a larger middle lobe, located opposite.
The baskets are up to 1.5 cm in diameter, more often single at the ends of the branches, flat, almost as wide as a length wound, with a double row wrapper.
The flowers are all tubular, dirty yellow.
The fruit is strongly flattened, wedge-shaped seed, 6-8 mm long, with two or three serrated spines on the top.
It blooms from June to September, the fruits ripen in August – September.
Spreading. Holarctic species. On the territory of Russia everywhere, except for the Far North.
Habitat. The plant is moisture-loving. It grows in damp places, through swamps, rivers and streams, in vegetable gardens as a weed. It often forms continuous thickets. It is cultivated in the Krasnodar Territory and Ukraine (Lviv region).


The chemical composition of beggar-ticks
The herb of beggar-ticks contains

  • a significant amount carotenoids (up to 50 mg% carotene),
  • ascorbic acid (60-70 mg%),
  • as well as flavonoids – butein, sulfuretin, sulfurein, luteolin, cynaroside, and others (more than 10 substances);
  • tannins;
  • polysaccharides;
  • coumarins.

The plant accumulates manganese.

Harvesting and storage of raw materials

Harvesting. The leafy stems up to 15-20 cm in length are cut or plucked in the vegetation phase before the formation of buds. At a later date, collect only side shoots. The raw materials are cleaned from coarse, thick stems. On the plantations there are used mechanized harvesting of beggar-ticks herb.
Security measures. When harvesting in nature it should not trample down plants and the herb cover. Given that the series reproduces only by seed, it is necessary to leave the most developed individuals for seed resumption.
Drying. For drying, the herb of the train is laid out with a layer of 5-7 cm on a tarp or shelves and turned over daily. The end of the drying is determined by the fragility of the stalks and stems. The yield of the dried raw material is 25%. At artificial drying temperature is allowed up to 35-40 °C.
Storage. It is stored in a dry place.

Whole raw materials
The leafy stems and their pieces, whole or crushed leaves and flower baskets.
The leaves are opposite, on short petiolate spliced with bases, median – three- and five-segmented with lanceolate serrate lobes, apical – whole, broadly, 15 cm long.
Stems are rounded oval, longitudinally grooved, up to 0.8 cm thick.
The inflorescences are baskets with a diameter of 0.6-1.5 cm. The unblown baskets are rounded, somewhat flattened on top, sometimes baskets are blooming. The outer leaves are of the cover in the amount of 3-8, green, elongated-lanceolate, pubescent along the edge, equal to or 2 times the basket.
The inner leaves of the cover are shorter, oblong-oval, membranous along the edge, brownish-yellow with numerous dark purple veins. The bed of the inflorescence is flat, seated with narrow membranous bracts.
The flowers are small, tubular, with two or three jagged spines instead of a calyx.
The colour of the leaves is green or brownish green, the stems are green or greenish-purple, the flowers are dirty yellow.
The smell is weak. The taste is bitter, slightly astringent.
Milled raw materials
The pieces of leaves, stems, buds and flowers are passing through a sieve with holes of 7 mm in diameter.

Properties and application

The pharmacological properties of beggar-ticks
In the experiments there are found:

  • diuretic,
  • antiallergic properties of beggar-ticks preparations.

The complex of flavonoids and polysaccharides inherent hepatoprotective properties that include:

  • choleretic
  • choltostimulating,
  • anti-inflammatory and
  • capillary strengthening components.

The combination of flavonoids and water-soluble polysaccharides helps to improve the absorption of the complex of biologically active substances of the series and increase its activity.
The metabolism is also affected by the manganese ions found in the plant. It is a part of various enzyme systems, affect the processes:

  • blood formation,
  • liver cell function
  • the tone of the vessel walls
  • able to prevent the formation of intravascular blood clots.

The extracts from beggar-ticks have:

  • antimicrobial action against gram-positive bacteria and some pathogenic fungi.

The preparations of beggar-ticks:

  • when applied locally, improve tissue trophism;
  • in case of a thermal burn, extracts from the herb of the train have an anti-inflammatory and protective effect.

Application of beggar-ticks
Bur beggar-ticks belongs to traditional medicine.
In the form of infusions and «tea» beggar-ticks is applied:

  • diuretic,
  • diaphoretic and

The antipyretic medication is used when:

  • psoriasis,
  • eczema,
  • athlete,
  • nesting alopecia.

For skin diseases (diathesis) and rickets, it is also used as a bath infusion.
For all types of local pruritic dermatosis, local baths are used.
Outwardly, beggar-ticks is used for:

  • treatment of purulent wounds,
  • trophic ulcers with signs of inflammation, a succession dries the wound surface and promotes faster healing of the affected skin.

The sequence is used as a cosmetic when:

  • acne,
  • seborrhea.

The infusion sequence is washed, making cosmetic masks.

Children’s age up to 3 years (inside); The second and third period of pregnancy, lactation (inside). External treatment with a series of preparations during pregnancy is permissible, provided that there is no allergy to the plant; individual intolerance (inside and out).
